Our Story

Douglas Briggs Partnership is a respected architecture and planning practice with over 30 years of experience. Founded by Douglas Briggs in 1991 with one fundamental concept: to provide clients with integrated solutions for Architecture and Town Planning.

Having qualified as both a Chartered Architect and a Chartered Town Planner and worked in Chichester for West Sussex County Council as their design and conservation adviser and subsequently for a large architectural practice, Douglas found that there was a growing dis-connect between Town Planning Consultants and Architects with each taking different and sometimes conflicting approaches to applications and Douglas saw as a full member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservators (IHBC) that dual qualified Chartered Architect Town Planners have a unique perspective that is greater than the sum of the two parts that enables them to bring solutions  where others could not.

Douglas set about implementing an Integrated approach to Architecture and Town Planning with his own practice founding Douglas Briggs Partnership in 1991 and it was not long before he was successful in negotiating listed building consents for householders and complex planning approvals such as those that restored historic racing to Goodwood.

The Goodwood Revival continues to thrive and Douglas' list of satisfied customers had grown when he was joined by his daughter Louise Shaw who was also a Town Planner with Local Authority experience.

Later joined by Alex Hall and Paul Hughes, both of which are dual qualified Chartered Architects and Chartered Planning Consultants,  the practice has helped all types of clients successfully navigate their projects through the planning process, using their integrated approach and constructive conservation to achieve planning approval, listed building consent and scheduled ancient monument consent for projects at scheduled ancient monuments, grade I, II* and II listed houses, barns, stables, granaries and churches

The practice also uses their skills and integrated approach to achieve planning consent for polo grounds, stables, all weather arenas and other equine applications and approval for glasshouse, polytunnel, packhouse, reservoirs and other agricultural and farm diversification projects as well as renewable energy projects such as solar power and anaerobic digesters.

Our team of dual qualified Architect Planners has a deep understanding of the complexities of the planning process, and we are known for our ability to successfully navigate these challenges on behalf of our clients, provide comprehensive services, from site analysis and design to planning applications and construction design, with a focus on an Integrated Approach to Architecture and Town planning that provides innovative solutions to meet our clients development objectives.
